18. Window: World War II

April 1945: In the last days of the war, the tower of the St. Marien church was hit in a bomb attack. During the invasion, British troops destroy a large part of the old town - provoked by the resistance in Uelzen and under the impression of Nazi crimes in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp that was liberated previously. However, they spare the civilian population - and some soldiers give the children chocolate.
